Donald L. McKernan Thesis Award

The Donald L. McKernan Award was established at the University of Washington School of Marine and Environmental Affairs to honor students who have written an outstanding thesis. $500 from the Donald L. McKernan Memorial Fund is awarded each year to the winning author. Professor McKernan was the first director of the Institute for Marine Studies, now named the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs. A plaque is prominently displayed at SMEA with the name of each recipient.

Recipient for 2009

Congratulations to Joe Zelasney, recipient of the 2009 McKernan Thesis Award! Joe is is now working for Washington Sea Grant (WSG) as a Knauss Sea Grant Fellow. WSG serves communities, industries and the people of Washington state, the Pacific Northwest and the nation through research, education and outreach by identifying and addressing important marine issues, providing better tools for management of the marine environment and use of its resources, and initiating and supporting strategic partnerships within the marine community. As a Knauss Fellow, Joe was provided a one-year work experience on the staff of the U.S. Congress or with a federal agency addressing marine issues.
