Assessment Guidelines
|
The social communication model presents a creative challenge for clinicians. In short, how can all of the components of interest (social communication behaviors, social cognitive, language, and processing abilities) be assessed? Assessment of social communication will need to include standardized tests and nonstandardized tasks. Standardized assessment instruments will provide information about performance under controlled conditions. This performance is used to compare children to normative data, which is typically necessary when attempting to qualify children for services. Nonstandardized tasks, by contrast, will provide a more functional picture of performance. They allow for examining performance in different contexts, which by definition, is vitally important for determining social communication competence. This section of the Web site will provide guidelines for assessing social communication. First, standardized tests will be discussed. We will provide recommendations for tests that assess social communication behaviors, social-cognitive abilities, language abilities, and processing operations. Second, nonstandardized tasks will be discussed. A model for nonstandardized tasks will be presented, including examples, references, and video demonstrations. You will be provided with information to assist you in developing an assessment protocol for examining the social communication behaviors, social-cognitive abilities, language abilities, and processing operations of children who are exhibiting social communication problems in school.
