Our 2014 Alumni Award Recipients
The UW School of Medicine Alumni Association is delighted to recognize the following individuals, recipients of this year’s alumni awards. Learn more about them, below, and watch the videos made to honor their achievements.
Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient: George Ojemann, M.D., Res., ’64
This award honors an alumnus or alumna whose professional achievements and cumulative contributions have brought personal distinction, enhanced the profession, improved the welfare of the general public and brought honor to their alma mater.
We honor Dr. Ojemann for his contributions to the fields of neurological surgery and the neurosciences. His research and care have improved the lives of many patients, and, through his career-long dedication to teaching, this emeritus faculty member has had an enormous impact on students and trainees at UW Medicine and beyond. Alumni Humanitarian Award Recipient: Matthew Oliva, M.D. ’99, Res., ’03
This award honors an alumnus or alumna who embodies the ideals of the UW School of Medicine and whose career reflects an ongoing commitment to serve others through the practice of medicine. Read more about Dr. Oliva at UW Medicine magazine.
We honor Dr. Oliva for his commitment to eradicating blindness worldwide. Dr. Oliva has performed thousands of cataract surgeries in the developing world, he conducts research on blindness, and he advocates for policies that will advance the eradication of blindness. Watch the video.
Alumni Early Achievement Award Recipient: Erik Van Eaton, M.D. ’01, Res. ’08, Fel. ’09
This award recognizes an alumnus or alumna who graduated from medical school within the last 20 years and has excelled in his or her career in medicine, making significant contributions to clinical care, medical science, humanitarianism or administrative activities.
We honor Dr. Van Eaton for his extraordinary accomplishments — multiple peer-reviewed publications, two book chapters and two software products — in just a few short years. Dr. Van Eaton is a UW assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. Watch the video.
Alumni Service Award Recipient: Ted Epperly, M.D. ’80
This award recognizes an alumnus or alumna whose dedicated and determined efforts benefitted the University of Washington School of Medicine and/or the University of Washington School of Medicine Alumni Association and/or his/her community.
We honor Dr. Epperly for his service to the WWAMI program, his leadership of the School’s Family Medicine Residency in Idaho and his advocacy for increased access to high-quality medical care in his state. Watch the video.
