The UW School of Medicine Alumni Association is delighted to recognize the following individuals, recipients of this year’s alumni awards. Learn more about them below.
Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Awards
This award honors alumni whose professional achievements and cumulative contributions have brought personal distinction, enhanced the profession, improved the welfare of the general public and brought honor to their alma mater.
Barbara J. deLateur, M.D. ’63, Res. ’67, M.S. ’68
We honor Dr. deLateur for her more than 50-year career in physical medicine and rehabilitation. With more than 180 publications, she has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the benefits of exercise, particularly among older adults, and has helped improve the quality of life for thousands of individuals. Henry G. Kaplan, M.D., Res. ’74, Chief Res. ’77
With a career spanning 40 years, Dr. Kaplan is honored for his contributions to the field of oncology and for the compassion and kindness he shows to his patients and colleagues alike. He has published more than 100 articles and abstracts, established one of the largest breast cancer databases in the country and received numerous honors and awards. Watch the video.
Alumni Humanitarian Award
This award honors an alumnus or alumna who embodies the ideals of the UW School of Medicine and whose career reflects an ongoing commitment to serve others through the practice of medicine.
Samuel R. Baker, M.D. ’66, Res. ’74
We honor Dr. Baker for his commitment to providing outstanding care to all, not only in his community of Port Angeles, Wash., but also across the globe in Bhutan. He led efforts to create a free clinic in Port Angeles, and he travels to Bhutan each year to teach orthopaedic procedures to technicians and physicians there. Watch the video.
Alumni Early Achievement Award
This award recognizes an alumnus or alumna who graduated from medical school within the last 20 years and has excelled in his or her career in medicine, making significant contributions to clinical care, medical science, humanitarianism or administrative activities.
Jonathan L. Wright, M.D. ’01, M.S. ’05, Res. ’07, FACS
We honor Dr. Wright for his exceptional early career as a surgeon, researcher and educator, already making significant contributions to the field of urologic oncology. He is also an outstanding teacher who leads by example and serves as an inspiration to his mentees. Watch the video.
Alumni Service Award
This award recognizes an alumnus or alumna whose dedicated and determined efforts have benefitted the University of Washington School of Medicine and/or the University of Washington School of Medicine Alumni Association and/or his/her community.
Michael J. Ryan, M.D., Res. ’89, Chief Res. ’90, Fel. ’93
We celebrate Dr. Ryan, a gifted educator and physician, for his years of dedication to the UW School of Medicine and for his outstanding leadership of the development and implementation of the School’s innovative new curriculum — the largest curriculum change since the start of the WWAMI program.
