How Does SORCE Work?

SORCE collaborates with interested investigators functioning as a “one-stop shop” with expertise in:

  • Outcomes research design
  • Grant application/budget development
  • IRB approval and study coordination
  • Data Management & Analysis
  • Statistical/epidemiologic support

SORCE trains
the next generation of health services researchers:

  • Funded 2-3 year training program with didactic and practical training using MPH/MS/PhD Department of Health Services in the School of Public Health and the K23, K12 and K30 funding mechanisms
  • Mentored outcomes research projects with surgical residents, fellows and students

SORCE educates
the community of surgeons, students and stakeholders:

  • Quarterly seminars in health services research
  • Monthly “work in progress” (WIP) sessions for surgical investigators

SORCE changes healthcare policy
by working with other stakeholders to develop:

  • SCOAP — a Washington State surgical process/outcomes tracking project
  • SCIP — the national process of care project
  • NSQIP — for the emerging American College of Surgeons accreditation project
  • Cooperative agreements with CMS, Medicaid and private insurers

SORCE collaborates with health services and surgical outcomes researchers in subspecialties across departments and institutions through the UW Surgical Outcomes Research Collaborative.
