Surgical Outcomes Research Center (SORCE)

Working with SORCE

Faculty Investigators

SORCE collaborates with affiliated faculty investigators by assisting in:

  • Faculty research development: research design, grant application and budget development, development of new collaborations with UW and outside partners
  • Investigator initiated study implementation:  start-up coordination of study resources and staff 
  • Statistical support:  statistical design, data management and analyses, epidemiologic support
  • Quality improvement initiatives: design, development and delivery of QI programs

Faculty interested in partnering with SORCE researchers and staff should contact sorce@u.washington.edu with a brief description of anticipated work and timeline for completion. 

Research Fellows

SORCE has ongoing opportunities for fellows to work on independent and SORCE projects in a rich training and support environment.  Surgical residents should follow the guidelines for pursuing a research fellowship laid out by the Departmentof Surgery residency program.

Interested persons should contact SORCE Director David Flum for more information and availability of upcoming positions prior to starting the fellowship application process. 

Staff Positions

We currently have two open positions at SORCE:

Program Operations Specialist
The purpose of this position is to provide high-level, professional program support to the SORCE Program under the direct supervision of the SORCE Administrator. To be successful in this position, the program operations specialist will need expert administrative skills applied in a research program setting and broad research program knowledge.  This position will need to accurately understand and interpret SORCE program operational issues in the broader context of the center, the Department, the School of Medicine, the University and funding agencies.  The Program Operations Specialist must demonstrate contextual and strategic understanding of the SORCE mission and be able to effectively communicate priorities between the SORCE Administrator and wide and diverse audiences.

Core Job Competencies:
• Exercises independent judgment and decision-making skills to solve administrative problems consistent with the goals and needs of the program;
• Demonstrates creative problem-solving abilities, independent resourcefulness, and prioritization skills;
• Exhibits well-developed critical thinking skills and astute professional judgment, particularly in ambiguous and unstructured situations;
• Demonstrates ability to operate without day-to-day direction or oversight and ability to move work forward without waiting for detailed instructions;
• Successfully “owns” responsibilities over and beyond a prescribed “to do” list. This position must be able to independently think through complex projects.
• Accurately understands and interprets policy around SORCE operations, University and funding agency policies, and standard research policy and protocols.
•  Demonstrated ability to accurately, precisely and in a timely manner work with grants and contracts, in pre-and-post award phases.

The areas of responsibility of this position fall into these categories:
• Grants and Contracts Management (50%)
• Program and Project Administrative Coordination (30%)
• Program and Project Resource Coordination (20%)

Health Services Analyst (Requisition #59604)
The SORCE Health Services Analyst is responsible for developing information systems, gathering data and providing necessary analyses for health services research and quality improvement projects.  The Health Services Analyst supports the work of SORCE Principal Investigators and projects performed at the multiple projects sites by combining their knowledge of health care delivery information systems and healthcare processes and data with analytic and presentation skills in order to provide the information necessary for effective health services and quality improvement analyses.  This position will be responsible for the design of information gathering systems and coordinate data gathering across multiple project sites.

•  Demonstrates ability to accurately, precisely and independently move forward research data milestone goals

• Information Systems Design, Development and Maintenance (35%)
• Data Acquisition and Management (30%)
• Data Analysis and Reporting (30%)

Intern Positions

SORCE has ongoing opportunities for undergraduate students to intern as research assistants.  Interns are expected to volunteer 9 to 15 hours per week and may take the internship for credit during academic quarters under SURG 499A.  Interns work on a variety of research projects as determined by need.  Common intern assignments include literature reviews, clinical record data abstraction, data entry, assistance in the translational animal laboratory, and research application preparation.  Upon demonstrated ability, interns may be given small projects to manage or develop on their own.  Interns are also expected to spend a small portion of time providing general support to SORCE staff.   Interns will have the opportunity to routinely interact with SORCE staff and participate in SORCE events.  Internship candidates should be interested in medicine, surgery, public health or health services.  Interested students should forward a letter of interest, resume, and daily availability to sorce@u.washington.edu.
