Surgical Outcomes Research Center (SORCE)

Working with SORCE

Faculty Investigators

SORCE collaborates with affiliated faculty investigators by assisting in:

  • Faculty research development: research design, grant application and budget development, development of new collaborations with UW and outside partners
  • Investigator initiated study implementation:  start-up coordination of study resources and staff 
  • Statistical support:  statistical design, data management and analyses, epidemiologic support
  • Quality improvement initiatives: design, development and delivery of QI programs

Faculty interested in partnering with SORCE researchers and staff should contact sorce@u.washington.edu with a brief description of anticipated work and timeline for completion. 

 

Research Fellows

SORCE has ongoing opportunities for fellows to work on independent and SORCE projects in a rich training and support environment.  Surgical residents should follow the guidelines for pursuing a research fellowship laid out by the Departmentof Surgery residency program.

Interested persons should contact SORCE Director David Flum for more information and availability of upcoming positions prior to starting the fellowship application process. 

 

Staff Positions

There are currently two open positions to work on the Surgical Care and Outcomes Assessment Program (SCOAP):

Surgical Quality Improvement Coordinator (Requisition # 52679)
The Surgical Quality Improvement Coordinator will be part of the SCOAP Data Integration team.  The purpose of the SCOAP Data Integration Team is to partner with SCOAP hospital sites to develop surgical process improvement strategies based on SCOAP evidence-based benchmark metrics, and then to encourage change towards benchmark goals from within the hospital.  This position will be responsible for high-level project management in surgical quality surveillance and intervention. Additionally, the Surgical Quality Improvement Coordinator will have programmatic responsibilities as part of the SCOAP research and development team which implements and manages SCOAP community collaboratives, new SCOAP surveillance module development, and the development of quality and financial data benchmarks and reports.

Program Assistant (Requisition # 57025)
The Program Assistant will be part of the SCOAP Data Integration team.  The purpose of the SCOAP Data Integration Team is to partner with SCOAP hospital sites to develop surgical process improvement strategies based on SCOAP evidence-based benchmark metrics, and then to encourage change towards benchmark goals from within the hospital.   This position will coordinate and conduct the accurate abstraction of surgical data from medical chart review at 4-6 hospital sites and serve as a liaison between the hospital and SCOAP.

Intern Positions

SORCE has ongoing opportunities for undergraduate students to intern as research assistants.  Interns are expected to volunteer 9 to 15 hours per week and may take the internship for credit during academic quarters under SURG 499A.  Interns work on a variety of research projects as determined by need.  Common intern assignments include literature reviews, clinical record data abstraction, data entry, assistance in the translational animal laboratory, and research application preparation.  Upon demonstrated ability, interns may be given small projects to manage or develop on their own.  Interns are also expected to spend a small portion of time providing general support to SORCE staff.   Interns will have the opportunity to routinely interact with SORCE staff and participate in SORCE events.  Internship candidates should be interested in medicine, surgery, public health or health services.  Interested students should forward a letter of interest, resume, and daily availability to sorce@u.washington.edu.
