How to

I. Install and run Space Pen

Space Pen requires several componenents to be installed on your computer.

1. check that Java 1.3 is already instal on your machine. It should be under C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\Jre. If you don't have it, download the all set from the Sun Website at: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/

2. Check that Java plug-in is installed and ready to run. It's should be in the Windows control panel. If you don't have it, download it from http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/index.html

3. Download and install java3D. It's at http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/3D/download.html.
For Windows 95/98/ME/2000 chose the 1.2 openGL version
For Windows XP, chose the 1.2 DX version (the openGL gives better results, but is way too slow).
Follow the installing procedure.

4. In order to view standards VRMl model you will need the vrml97 loader package that you can download here.

5. Put the vrml97.jar file into the "ext" directory of the java library. Normally, this should be under C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\Jre\1.3\lib\ext In that directory you should already have the following packages: j3daudio.jar, j3dcore.jar, j3dutils.jar and vecmath.jar Just add the vrml97.jar package.

SpacePen has been developped in Java3D. So unfortunatly, it's working only on PC.
Space Pen has been successfully tested on Windows 98. On Windows 2000, it seems that some special keyboard interactions don't work (like filling a shape with the "F" key), and that the line drawn appear really thin (only one pixel wide, whereas normally it should be 3)
We'll try very soon on windows ME We're intending to try on Irix 6.5 as soon as we get the operating system to work :-) And Mac users, we aren't forgeting you. We're pressing Apple to make Java 3D available on one of their Operating System (9 or X).
Also Apple has announced they will provide a Mac version of the Plug-in.
