Placement
Testing Information
Students who took Spanish or Portuguese in high school must take a
Placement Test before being eligible to register for classes.
100-level Spanish Placement Test Score Ranges
| 0-15 points: |
Eligible for 101 |
| 16-44 points: |
Eligible for 102 |
10-44 points AND
two years of
high school Spanish: |
Eligible for 110 |
| 45-69 points: |
Eligible for 103 |
| 70+: |
Eligible for 201* |
*Students with scores of 70+ are also eligible
to take the 200-level Spanish placement exam. Students must schedule
an appointment with the Office of Educational Assessment in order
to take the 200-level exam. It is important to note that it can take
about 2 weeks for the 200-level Spanish placement exams to be graded
and posted to student records, and they are not graded over winter/spring
breaks, or during summer quarter.

| 146-165 points: |

| 166-175 points: |
Eligible for 301 |

Portuguese Placement
Students who take the Portuguese placement exam are placed based on
the Portuguese instructor's assessment. Please contact the Office
of Educational Assessment for test schedule information.
Graduate Student Foreign Language Requirement
An exam is available for graduate students who need to comply with
a foreign language requirement in Spanish or Portuguese. Please contact
the Office of Educational Assessment for schedule information.
Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE)
Students who passed the DELE exam may use it for placement in the following manner:
A student who passes A2, will be placed into SPAN 202
A student who passes B1, will be placed into SPAN 301
A student who passes B2, will be placed into SPAN 303
