Registration Policies and Procedures
100-LEVEL
- All undergraduate students who qualify for 100-level Spanish
courses are eligible to register via MyUW during Period One, whether
currently in the Spanish sequence or not (new policy as of Spring
2005).
- It is recommended that students register for courses as soon
as they become eligible to do so, as courses will fill up quickly.
- Spanish 110: Students with two years of high school Spanish
AND a placement test score of 10-44 are eligible for this class.
200-LEVEL
- ALL undergraduate students who meet the prerequisites for SPAN
201, 202, or SPAN 203 can register via MyUW during Period One,
whether currently in the Spanish sequence or not.
Addiitoal Policies to keep in mind:
- There are absolutely NO OVERLOADS in any of our sections.
- Students are not added to our courses after the first week of

SUMMER
INTENSIVE COURSE
SPAN 134 (and the 121, 122, & 123 series)
Spanish 121-122-123
- The SPAN 121-122-123 series is a beginning Spanish series offered
in the Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, respectively. This
"immersion" series parallels 101-102-103, and therefore,
credit is not allowed for both sequences. More specifically, students
who already have credit for SPAN 101 will not receive credit for
SPAN 121, students who already have credit for SPAN 102/110 will
not receive credit for SPAN 121 or 122, and students who already
have credit for SPAN 103 will not receive credit for SPAN 121,
122, or 123. In addition, students who completed at least two
years of Spanish in high school are not able to receive credit
for the 121 portion of this sequence.
Spanish 134
- The 15-credit intensive SPAN 134, offered in the summer, has
a similar credit policy. This series utlilizes the same methods
as 121-122-123, and is equivalent to completing SPAN 101, 102
and 103 in one intensive summer course. Students who already have
credit for SPAN 101 (or 121) will receive only 10 credits for
SPAN 134, students who already have credit for SPAN 102/110 (or
122) will receive only 5 credits for SPAN 134, and students who
already have credit for SPAN 103 (or 123) will not receive credit
for SPAN 134. In addition, students who completed at least two
years of Spanish in high school receive only 10 credits for SPAN
134.
The policy above applies to students who took
SPAN 134 Summer 2003 or later, or the SPAN 121-122-123 sequence Autumn
2003 or later.

300-LEVEL
Spanish 301-313; 317+
- SPAN 301 and SPAN 310 are open during Period One to students
registered in SPAN 203. Students who took SPAN 203 in a previous
quarter, or have transfer credit, or have a placement test score
are eligible to register in either SPAN 301 or 310 during Period
Two.
- Starting from SPAN 302 majors only have priority registration during Period One.
Non-majors, including minors are eligible to register during Period Two.
- If classes are full, students should keep trying online for possible openings.
- During the first week of the quarter, if there are spaces available, instructors will
consider students who have attended their classes daily and may give out add codes at their
discretion.
- Students may not add SPAN courses during the second week of the quarter.
- Students may enroll in only one Spanish grammar course at a time.
Spanish 314-316
- Contact Marķa Gillman (mgill@u.washington.edu)
for eligibility in these courses. Admission is by entry code only.
400-LEVEL
- Non-majors, including minors contact our advising office via email at
spsadv@u.washington.edu, including student
number, course number, and SLN#. Please explain any special circumstances. If space is
available, the adviser may add students who meet course prerequisites, giving priority to
graduating seniors who need to meet our program requirements. If a given course is full,
students should contact the professor directly. During the first week of the quarter,
professors may distribute entry codes at their discretion.

ADDING
CLASSES DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE QUARTER
- There are absolutely NO OVERLOADS in any of our sections.
- Students may be added to a class ONLY IF there are spaces available
AND they meet the pre-requisite/s.
- Once the quarter starts, it is unlikely that openings will become
available. If a student attends a class for the first 3 days of
the quarter (first 2 days in the summer), there is NO GUARANTEE
that he/she will be added to that class.
- Attending more than one section does not guarantee that you
will get into a class. We recommend attending one section only.
There are always more students wishing to add than there are available
spaces, and overloads are not permitted.
- During the first week of the quarter, should a space become
available in a given section, priority will be given to a student
who is attending that section. Priority is established based on
need (someone who is near graduation AND needs the class to comply
with a Foreign Language Requirement would have high priority,
for example).
- We are unable to accommodate registered students who wish to
switch from one time slot to another.
- Because we cannot guarantee admission into our classes once
the quarter has started, it is advised that you do not attend
classes beyond the 3rd day of the of the first week of the quarter.
It is unlikely that students will drop a class later in the week.
- Before the5th day of the quarter, you will know if you have
been added to one of our courses to the class that you've been
attending. If you are not able to register for Spanish, please
be sure to register for a class in another department in order
to ensure full-time enrollment. Students are responsible for having
a back-up plan in order to meet financial aid or other requirements
prior to the start of the quarter. Once again, no adds after the
first week.
- Please note that audits are not allowed in our language courses.
- EOP sections are for EOP students only. You can identify these
sections by their enrollment limit of 15 students. They are also
marked as "EOP" sections on the online time schedule.

TRYING TO GET INTO A CLOSED SPANISH COURSE?
- If you are trying to get into a closed 100 or 200-level Spanish
class, you are encouraged to keep an eye on registration until
the start of the quarter. If you aren't able to register for a
course before then, you may want to attend a section for the first
3 days of the quarter (first 2 days in the summer) to be considered
for any spaces that may become available.
- If you attend a section, be sure to sign the 3-Day Attendance
Sheet (2-Day Attendance Sheet in summer) provided by the instructor
every day; please include your student #, local telephone #, and
email address. If you do not attend a section for the first 3
days of the quarter (first 2 days in the summer), you will not
be added to that section even if spaces are available.
- After the third day of the quarter (2nd day of the quarter in
summer), the Advising Office will determine who can be added to
each section. We will not add students after the first week of
the quarter. Students who we are able to add to sections will
be contacted directly via email, and their instructors notified
of the change. If you do not receive an email by the 5th day of
the quarter (4th day in the summer), it is safe for you to assume
that you will not be added to the section.
- Please keep in mind that there is no guarantee that we will
be able to add you to a section. There are always more students
wishing to add than there are available spaces, and overloads
are not permitted. We are unable to accommodate switches from
one section to another.
- It is your responsibility to have the appropriate number of
credits for financial aid, medical insurance, graduation requirements,
etc., *before* the end of the first week of the quarter. In other
words, please have a backup class in the event that we are unable
to add you to a Spanish class. We will not add students to classes
after the 5th day of the quarter.
- If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the 100/200-level
adviser, Lani Phillips, at spanport@u.washington.edu.
