Graduate
Students from departments other than the Division of Spanish and Portuguese
Studies who wish to apply for Teaching Assistant positions must provide the
following materials. Those wishing to apply for a Teaching
Assistantship must be accepted in a UW Graduate Program before submitting materials:
1. A completed "Assistantship and Fellowship Application."
2. A copy of your application materials submitted
to your academic department (transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE, (TOEFL/TSE
if applicable) scores, statement of purpose and any other pertinent documents).
3. A one or two-page academic autobiographical statement written in Spanish or Portuguese, presenting data you think relevant to your application. Be sure to specify your objectives as a graduate student, particularly the degree(s) you plan to seek and your professional aspirations.
Title IX of the Education Act of 1972 prohibits discrimination in admission on the basis of marital and parental status. Please do not mention these matters in your application.
4. A CD or cassette recording (no micro-cassettes)
of you reading the autobiographical statement requested in item (3) above, as
well as any other comments you wish to make.
5. International students should note that the UW Graduate School's minimum speaking score for international teaching assistants is considerably higher than the requirement for admission. This higher score must be demonstrated on the speaking part of the TOEFLiBT or on the TSE or SPEAK.
NOTE: Your file will be routed to selection the committees only after notification
has been received that you have been accepted to the UW as a graduate student.
Priority for Teaching Assistantship positions will go to graduate students in
the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies.
Teaching Assistant contracts are awarded for the academic year only.
In addition, ALL Teaching Assistants are required to attend the Graduate School and departmental orientations held before autumn quarter begins. All TAs are required to register in SPAN 510 (5 credits) in autumn quarter of the year of their appointment.
