The Global Village Summer Camp ("Camp Spanglish")

University of Washington
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Overview
This summer, the Division of Spanish & Portuguese Studies at the University of Washington, in collaboration with La Fundación de la Lengua Española (The Foundation of the Spanish Language), an NGO located in Valladolid, Spain, will sponsor a Spanish Language Summer Camp for high school students. Between July 1 and July 21, 2009, 20 Spanish high school students will live and study with 20 American counterparts in dorms on the UW campus.
Mornings will be devoted to study, and afternoons and evenings to extracurricular activities. From 9am-12pm Monday-Friday, the young Spaniards will study English, while the American students will learn Spanish. All American students will receive 3 credits of SPAN 199 from the University of Washington for the Spanish course they take.
From lunch on, all students will engage in joint activities, ranging from volleyball, soccer, tennis, and basketball, to swimming, canoeing, and hiking. We anticipate that the friendships forged during Camp Spanglish will last well beyond the three weeks of the program.
