Major Requirements*
A minimum of 58 credits (12 courses total) above Spanish 203 are
required, as well as participation in an approved Foreign Study Program
or Experiential Learning:
***All required 300-level coursework except SPAN 323 must be
completed before enrolling in 400-level courses numbered 410-499.***
- 15 credits: SPAN 301-302-303 or 314-315-316
Advanced Grammar, Lexicon, & Stylistics (5,5,5) Must be
taken in sequence.
- 5 credits: SPAN 321
Introduction to Hispanic Literary Studies
Core requirement for 400-level courses 410-499. ***Only
offered Autumn Quarter.***
- 5 credits: SPAN 322
Introduction to Hispanic Cultural Studies
Core requirement for 400-level courses 410-499.
***Only offered Winter Quarter.***
- 5 credits: SPAN 323
Introduction to Hispanic Linguistic Studies
Core requirement for 400-level courses 400-408.
***Only offered Spring Quarter & Summer A Term.***
- 3-5 credits: One 300-level elective literature course
chosen from SPAN 304-308, 319, 339, 340, 350-352, 394, or 395.
- 25 credits: Five 400-level courses (SPAN 400-499)
Other than SPAN 400-406, only one course whose instructional
materials are primarily in English (typically cross-listed classes) may apply toward the major.
- Participation in an approved Study Abroad Program (1 quarter minimum, any level),
or 2 quarters (60 hours) of Experiential Learning (2 credits of SPAN 392: 30 hours per credit, 1 credit per quarter) which
involves significant engagement with the Spanish-speaking community.
Restrictions: Only one course numbered 400-405 may apply to
the major requirements. Only one course whose instructional materials are primarily
in English (typically cross-listed classes) may apply to the major. SPAN 327 may not apply to the major,
however, students unable to undertake study abroad have priority admission
to 327 (not open to heritage/native speakers).
*If you declared a Spanish Major prior to Winter Quarter 2008, you have the option of completing
the previous major requirements
or the new major requirements.
300-level Coursework Prerequisites
Prerequisites for 313, 321-323, 331-334: Concurrent enrollment
in or completion of SPAN 301, 310, or 314.
Prerequisites for 304-308, 319, 331, 339, 340, 350-352, 360, 394, 395:Completion
of SPAN 301, 310, or 314.
- Note: These core courses are only offered once a year:
SPAN 321 (Autumn), SPAN 322 (Winter), SPAN 323 (Spring).
400-level Coursework Prerequisites
Prerequisites for 400-405: SPAN 301, 310, or 314; one of the
following courses- ANTH 203, LING 200, LING 201, LING 202, LING 203,
LING 400, or SPAN 323.
Prerequisites for 406: SPAN 303, 316, or 360; SPAN 323.
Prerequisites for 408: SPAN 303 or 316; SPAN 323 (SPAN 406 is also recommended).
Prerequisites for 410-499: SPAN 303, 316, or 330; SPAN 321;
SPAN 322; one additional 300-level literature course.

Note: To apply to the Spanish major, you will need to complete a
Change
of Major Form and attach a copy of your unofficial transcript,
highlighting the details that make you eligible to apply. Please make sure to
write your email address on the Change of Major Form. Completed
applications may be put in Suzanna Martinez's box in Padelford C-104.
Applications to the Spanish major will only be accepted until the
third Friday of the quarter (Autumn, Winter, and Spring) from all
students currently enrolled at the UW. Students are not admitted to
the Spanish major during Summer Quarter.
