PROGRAM DESCRIPTION


Overview

During Autumn Quarter 2013, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies will take a group of motivated Advanced Level students to León, Spain to live with local families and study Spanish language and literature at the newly renovated Palacio Conde Luna Study Center.




Dates

The dates of the program will coincide with Autumn Quarter on campus (September 21, 2013 - December 14, 2013).



Courses

While enrolled in this program, students will complete the following courses (all courses are required, and receive a numerical grade):

SPAN 301 & 302 OR SPAN 302 & 303- Advanced Spanish (10 credits)

SPAN 321- Introduction to Hispanic Literary Studies (5 credits)

SPAN 394- Literature/Film (3 credits)




Excursions & Other Activities

An example of the types of excursions that may be included in the program are as follows (exact details/excursions forthcoming): local points of interest such as the World Heritage Site of Las Médulas where the Romans mined gold two thousand years ago, and the picturesque town of Astorga - whose history also dates back to Roman times. There may also be an overnight trip to Santiago de Compostela, with optional trekking on foot the last 8-15 kilometers along the centuries-old Way of Saint James pilgrimage route.



Housing Information

Participants will be placed individually with local families within walking distance of the palacio. Three meals per day will be provided. This housing arrangement allows students to be immersed in the local culture and have the opportunity to speak only Spanish for the duration of the program.



Insurance

Participants must provide proof of health/accident insurance coverage. Please refer to IPE's Health Insurance webpage for information regarding health insurance while studying abroad.



ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION


Eligibility Requirements

Completion of SPAN 203 or 301, or placement into SPAN 301, prior to Autumn Quarter 2012. Students who have completed SPAN 302 or above are not eligible for this program.

FINANCIAL & ENROLLMENT INFORMATION


Program Fees

The total cost of the program (including a room and three meals a day with a Spanish family, and program overhead) is $7,400. This amount includes everything EXCEPT round-trip airfare, local transportation (except for the group excursions), $300 fee to International Programs and Exchanges, textbooks, passport, health insurance, and pocket money.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Undergraduates who intend to study abroad are encouraged to apply for the Fritz Undergraduate Scholarship for Study Abroad and the Global Opportunities Scholarship for Study Abroad.

Students seeking further information on financial aid and scholarships for foreign study should visit the IPE Financial Aid webpage, or request the Financial Aid outline from the IPE Office. In addition, students may reference the UW Scholarship Office website for more information on general and foreign study scholarships. Students will maintain their eligibility to receive most forms of UW student financial aid while participating in this program, provided that they concurrently enroll.



Refund Schedule

The $350 program deposit and $300 IPE Fee are non-refundable. Students withdrawing from a program will be responsible for a percentage of the program fee depending on the date of withdrawal. More details about the withdrawal policy will be included in your payment contract. No part of the program fee is refundable once the program has begun. The date of withdrawal is considered the date (business day) a withdrawal form is received by the IPE Office.
