PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
During Spring Quarter 2008 the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies will take a group of motivated students to León, Spain, to live with local families and study Spanish language at the University of León.



PROGRAM DATES
Dates of the program will coincide with spring quarter at UW - March 31 - June 13, 2008.



COURSES
While enrolled in this program, students will complete the following courses (all courses are required, and receive a numerical grade):

SPAN 103- Elementary Spanish (5 credits)
SPAN 201- Intermediate Spanish (5 credits)
SPAN 237- Spanish Conversation (2 credits)
SPAN 299- Spanish Culture (3 credits)



ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Completion of SPAN 110, 102, 122, or placement into SPAN 103 prior to Spring Quarter 2008.



HOUSING INFORMATION
Participants will be placed individually with local families within walking distance of the university. Three meals per day will be provided. This housing arrangement allows students to be immersed in the local culture and have the opportunity to speak only Spanish for the duration of the program.



EXCURSIONS & OTHER ACTIVITIES
Students will participate in group excursions and activities. Access will be provided to University of León sports facilities, library, and computer labs.



PROGRAM FEES- SPRING 2008
The total cost of the program (including a room and three meals a day with a Spanish family, and program overhead) will be approximately US$6,200*. This amount includes everything EXCEPT round-trip airfare, local transportation (except for the group excursions), textbooks, passport, health insurance outside of the exact dates of the program, $200 IPE fee to International Programs and Exchanges, and pocket money.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE
All fees will be charged to student accounts and paid to the UW Student Fiscal Services Office (219 Schmitz Hall) according to the following schedule:

PLEASE NOTE: The price of the dollar against the Euro is volatile. Your payments are made in dollars but almost all expenses are paid in Euros. If the price of the Euro fluctuates greatly in either direction, a refund may be made or an additional fee charged.

Alternative payment arrangements for students receiving UW Financial Aid can be made with Telia Bustetter, International Programs and Exchanges (telia@u.washington.edu). Nonpayment by the scheduled dates may constitute grounds for your removal from the program.

INSURANCE
Health insurance will be provided by the University of León during the dates of the program. Participants must provide proof of health/accident insurance coverage if they plan to travel prior to or following the program; International Programs and Exchanges can provide information on the cost of health insurance.



APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  3. Include one letter of recommendation, preferably from a UW Spanish instructor.

Please drop off your application materials in the 100/200-level Spanish Advising, C-106 Padelford Hall. Applications received by January 15 , 2008 will be given priority.



SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID
Undergraduates who intend to study abroad are encouraged to apply for the IPE Undergraduate Scholarship, a merit-based scholarship open to all concurrently enrolled study abroad participants. IPE Undergraduate Scholarship applications can be obtained from the IPE office or website: http://ipe.washington.edu.

Students seeking further information on financial aid and scholarships for foreign study should visit the IPE web site at http://www.ipe.washington.edu/aboutus/fiscalform.html or request the Financial Aid outline from the IPE office. In addition, students may reference the UW Scholarship Office web site, http://www.washington.edu/students/ugrad/scholar/, for more information on general and foreign study scholarships. Students will maintain their eligibility to receive most forms of UW student financial aid while participating in this program, provided that they concurrently enroll.



CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT & PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION
Students participating in the program must concurrently enroll during Spring Quarter 2008. Concurrent enrollment allows students to do the following during the period of study abroad:
  • Remain enrolled in the UW
  • Maintain financial aid and scholarship eligibility
  • Earn regular, graded UW credit
  • Maintain pre-registration privileges
  • Continue deferment of any school-related loans
  • Satisfy residency requirements for graduation
  • Purchase the UW Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan
In order to receive concurrent enrollment forms and other pertinent information on health, safety, culture and academic matters in relation to study abroad, students will be required to attend the FIUTS/IPE Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation. Date and time TBA.



REFUND SCHEDULE
Students withdrawing before February 20, 2008* will be refunded all but the non-refundable $350 program deposit. Any student withdrawing from the program after this deadline will be liable for any non-recoverable payments already made or committed on behalf of the participant, which could range up to the entire program fee. No refunds will be given once the program begins.

Notice of withdrawal from the program must be made in writing to both the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Advising Office, Box 354360, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, 98195-4360, and International Programs and Exchanges, Box 355815, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, 98195-5815.
