Spanish and Portuguese Studies - University of Washington
  Oaxaca, Mexico Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Overview

During Autumn Quarter 2011, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese studies will take a group of up to twenty five 200-level students to the city of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, to live with local families and study local culture and Spanish language for a quarter.

Oaxaca is a beautiful, sunny, Colonial city of 550,000 in southern Mexico, known for its rich ethnic mix and vibrant cultural life. (This said, Mexico is a developing country and some services students are accustomed to may not be available.)

Dates- Autumn 2011
(The dates of the program will be the same as those for Autumn Quarter on campus).
  • Students need to arrive in Oaxaca by September 25, 2011 and may leave on December 10, 2011.*

  • Classes (Autumn A-Term): September 28- October 28, 2011.

  • Travel in small groups: November 1-6, 2011.

  • Classes (Autumn B-Term): November 7- December 9, 2011.
*Student housing will be budgeted for these dates.

Courses

Classes will be held at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, a language institute housed in a Colonial style home surrounded by lush gardens. The normal course load is 15 credits. All students must enroll in the conversation and culture/history course.

All students will enroll in the following classes:
  1. SPAN 201 (Term A) and 202 (Term B), OR SPAN 202 (Term A) and 203 (Term B), Spanish Grammar, 10 credits (numerical grade), taught by UW faculty/teaching assistant.

  2. SPAN 237 (Term A), Spanish Conversation, 2 credits (numerical grade), taught by Mexican faculty.

  3. SPAN 299 (Term B), Culture/History Course, 3 credits (numerical grade), taught by Mexican faculty.
Students may also participate in optional workshops in Mexican cooking, salsa dancing, etc. Credit will not be awarded for these workshops.

Excursions & Other Activities

Our program is scheduled to coincide with the elaborate ceremonies of the Days of the Dead (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). After the Days of the Dead, students will be free to travel in small groups for 5-6 days, to nearby cities and beaches such as Puerto Ángel, Puerto Escondido, Taxco, Mexico City, or San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. They will then return to Oaxaca City for another month of classes.

Housing Information

Participants will be placed individually with local families, with whom they will take two meals. The purpose of staying with local families is so that students will be immersed in Mexican culture and have the opportunity to speak only Spanish for the duration of the program.

Insurance

Participants should provide proof of health/accident insurance coverage; International Programs and Exchanges can provide information on the cost of health insurance.

Eligibility Requirements

Once you have been admitted to the program you will be expected to apply for a passport and book and pay for your own flights.

Payment Schedule

Program fees will be posted to your MyUW student account and can be paid the same way that you pay tuition and other fees. A $350 non-refundable program deposit and $250 non-refundable IPE fee will be charged to your MyUW account once your signed contract has been received by the Study Abroad Office:

Nonpayment by the scheduled dates may constitute grounds for your removal from the program.

"In Fall 2001, i was privileged enough to go to Oaxaca with the Spanish/Portugese Dept. I have to say that it is still one of my fondest memories of my undergrad at UW. Even eight years later, I am still in touch with my host family!... I just wanted to extend my thanks to the Department for having this opportunity continue to exist for future study abroad students. I am grateful for the experience."
