Spanish and Portuguese Studies - University of Washington
  Oaxaca, Mexico Program

Autumn Quarter 2008

Program Description
Eligibility & Application
Financial Questions

During Autumn Quarter 2008, the Division of Spanish and Portuguese studies will take a group of up to 25 200-level students to the city of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, to live with local families and study local culture and Spanish language for a quarter.

Oaxaca is a beautiful, sunny, Colonial city of 550,000 in southern Mexico, known for its rich ethnic mix and vibrant cultural life. (This said, Mexico is a developing country and some services students are accustomed to may not be available.)

Our program is scheduled to coincide with the elaborate ceremonies of the Days of the Dead (Oct. 31-Nov. 1). After the Days of the Dead, students will be free to travel in small groups for 7-9 days, to nearby cities and beaches such as Puerto Ángel, Puerto Escondido, Taxco, Mexico City, or San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. They will then return to Oaxaca City for another month of classes. (The dates of the program will be the same as those for Autumn Quarter on campus).

Questions about the program can be answered by the 100/200-level Spanish Adviser (Padelford C-106, (206) 616-9579, spanport@u.washington.edu ), or the Executive Director, Ganesh Basdeo (bas@u.washington.edu, http://courses.washington.edu/dibas/Oaxaca/oaxaca_program.html, (206) 543-6642).

Classes will be held at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, a language institute housed in a Colonial style home surrounded by lush gardens.

Participants will be placed individually with local families, with whom they will take two meals. The purpose of staying with local families is so that students will be immersed in Mexican culture and have the opportunity to speak only Spanish for the duration of the program.

Students planning to participate in the program in Autumn 2008 may want to take SPAN 206, Culture and Art of Oaxaca, 3 credits, during Spring quarter 2008, although this is not a prerequisite for participation. The course will be taught by Jorge González, panta@u.washington.edu.
