Spanish and Portuguese Studies - University of Washington
  Summer Program in León, Spain

Spanish Poetry in its Living Context

El Barrio Húmedo

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Overview

During Summer Quarter B-Term 2009 the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies will take a group of motivated advanced-level students to León, Spain, to live with local families and take a course on Spanish Poetry in our new León Center. The Center is located in the historic 14th Century Palacio Conde de Luna, in León Spain. Just renovated, the Palacio will be our home base for four weeks as we study two complementary and interdependent poetic traditions.

Dates

Dates of the program will be July 23 - August 22, 2009.

Courses

Participants will receive five or six credits in one of the following courses (depending on the level of Spanish taken before departure):

SPAN 393, SPAN 493, OR SPAN 590

The class will begin with a review of the major poets of the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque, including Garcilaso de la Vega, Fray Luis de León, and Luis de Góngora. Later, you will examine the popular ballad tradition that originated in the Middle Ages, flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque, and continues uninterrupted into the twenty-first century.

Excursions & Other Activities

Outside of class, students will have an opportunity to explore the city of León and its environs. The program also includes excursions to local points of interest, including visits to Salamanca -home Spain’s oldest university-, the World Heritage Site of Las Médulas where the Romans mined gold two thousand years ago, and the picturesque town of Astorga- whose history also dates back to Roman times. In addition, we will make an overnight “pilgrimage” to Santiago de Compostela, trekking on foot the last 8-15 kilometers along the centuries-old Way of Saint James pilgrimage route, which leads right up to Saint James Cathedral in the heart of Santiago in the Northwest corner of Spain.

Housing Information

Participants will be placed individually with local families and be provided with three meals per day. This housing arrangement allows students to be immersed in the local culture and have the opportunity to speak only Spanish for the duration of the program.

Insurance

Participants will need to provide proof of health/accident insurance coverage for the duration of the program. For students not otherwise insured, we recommend the $35/month UW Study Abroad Health Insurance. Please see Suzanna Martínez for brochure and enrollment forms (do not enroll online).
