Prior to beginning the Clinical Fellowship, Sstudents must complete a minimum of 375 clock hours of supervised clinical experience in the practice of speech-language pathology (325 minimum in the graduate program) plus 25 hours of observation for a total of 400 hours.

Didactic Coursework

The didactic courses listed above are required courses in the Core SLP Graduate Program unless otherwise noted. Didactic courses are scheduled around the needs of the clinical practica. Prospective students should be aware that some required courses may need to be offered during late afternoon or evening hours (e.g., 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.). In addition, classes may occasionally need to meet on Saturdays.

Master’s Thesis vs. Comprehensive Exam

Graduation from the program is dependent upon successful completion of either a thesis or comprehensive exam. In the Core SLP program, students have the option of completing a Master’s Thesis under the guidance of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty in lieu of the comprehensive exam. The thesis option is strongly recommended for students who are interested in research and may later pursue a doctoral degree. Students completing a thesis should expect to:

  • take additional coursework requirements in statistics and research methods
  • register for nine additional credits of research credit
  • successfully participate in a thesis defense

In some cases students who do theses may have to extend their programs to appropriately complete their projects.

Independent Study

In the Core SLP program, students have the option of completing an Independent Study (with faculty advisor approval) under the guidance of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty in a subject matter area of interest.
