MedSLP Program Overview

The MedSLP Master's program is a three-year program grounded on the foundational processes and mechanisms involved in human communication and its disorders. It is designed to provide a focused, advanced course of study for students planning to work as Speech-Language Pathologist in medical and clinical settings. This program is distinguished by its innovative second and third years, and graduates of the MedSLP program will be well-qualified for positions across diverse health-care settings such as hospitals, acute and long-term care facilities, and rehabilitation centers.

The first year of the program is focused on providing students with foundational knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, cognitive-communication disorders, swallowing and hearing disorders across the lifespan. Students also participate in multiple practicum experiences, focused on establishing and developing clinical methodologies and skills through evaluation and treatment of both adult and pediatric clients.

The second year includes enhanced coursework significant to the practice of medical speech pathology and a series of part- and full-time clinical practicum placements in community facilities. The community-based practicum placements were designed to introduce the students to a variety of populations across the continuum of care, enabling acquisition of knowledge and skills best obtained in the medical and clinical settings. During the final quarter of the second year, students complete a culminating, clinical internship experience in the community in preparation for their clinical fellowship year.

The third year is devoted to supporting the clinical fellowship (CF) and furthering professional development. Faculty assist students in identifying and applying for clinical fellowship opportunities both locally and nationally. Faculty collaborate with students to best match their interests and skills with facilities accepting clinical fellows. MedSLP students also receive assistance with preparing resumes, writing cover letters, enhancing interviewing skills, and connecting with appropriate hiring managers and supervisors across facilities and settings.
