Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

Students in the MedSLP program are provided with a unique course in the principles and methods of evidence-based practice (EBP). This coursework is designed to teach students to combine research evidence with their own clinical expertise, their patient’s values and documented progress in treatment in order to guide clinical decision-making.

Independent Study

In the MedSLP program, students have the option of completing an Independent Study (with faculty advisor approval) under the guidance of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty in a subject matter area of interest.

Master’s Thesis vs. Comprehensive Exam

Graduation from the program is dependent upon successful completion of either a thesis or comprehensive exam. In the MedSLP program, students have the option of completing a Master’s Thesis under the guidance of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty in lieu of the comprehensive exam. The thesis option is strongly recommended for students who are interested in research and may later pursue a doctoral degree. Students completing a thesis should expect to:

  • take additional coursework requirements in statistics and research methods
  • register for nine additional credits of research credit
  • successfully participate in a thesis defense

In some cases, students who do theses may have to extend work into the third year to appropriately complete their projects.

Tuition

Tuition for academic year 2008-2009 is $5250 per quarter for students in either the first or second year of the program, and $1250 per quarter for students in the third year of the program. These tuition rates are exclusive of University registration, technology, and service and activities fees.

Tuition rates for the 2009-2010 academic year will be available in early 2009. Prospective students should anticipate an annual tuition increase of 3-5% from the current rates.
