UW Medical Speech Language Masters Program

MedSLP Clinical Practica

In the MedSLP program, students gain clinical experience in a variety of practice settings including acute care, in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation, long-term care, private practice and outpatient clinics, including the UW Speech and Hearing Clinic.

The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences holds affiliation agreements with over 80 clinical facilities throughout Western Washington and nationally, which provide speech-language pathology services across the life span. These affiliation agreements formalize our partnerships with community-based training sites who have agreed to partner with the University to provide clinical learning experiences for our graduate students. During the second year, students in the MedSLP program complete four off-site clinical experiences. They complete three, part-time practicum rotations, and one full-time internship experience during their final quarter. This internship is completed locally or nationally based on the student’s interest and internship site availability. Many out-of-state internships are pre-requisites for Clinical Fellowship consideration.

Students are expected to provide their own transportation to and from all assigned practicum placements. Some off-site practicum placements begin in the first year, so students need to have transportation arrangements in place at the start the program. Many facilities are served by public transportation, but not all. In addition, given that many hospitals and medical settings provide weekend speech pathology services, some students may be required to be onsite during weekends as part of their practicum assignment.
