Offsite Clinical Practica
The Department has affiliation agreements providing student placement opportunities with more than forty medical facilities and clinics in the Puget Sound region. During the second year, students gain clinical experience in acute care settings, in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation facilities, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics and private practices. The affiliated facilities provide services across the life span, from birth to geriatric populations.

Students are expected to provide their own transportation and possibly work on weekends when completing offsite practica and their Clinical Fellowship. Some offsite practica placements begin in the first year, so students need to have transportation arrangements in place at the start the program. Many facilities are served by public transportation, but not all.
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)
Students in the Medical Speech-Language Pathology program are provided with a three-course series in the principles and methods of evidence-based practice (EBP). This coursework is designed to go well beyond appraising the diagnostic and treatment literature in speech-language pathology. It is intended to teach students to combine research evidence with their own clinical expertise, their patient’s values and documented progress in treatment in order to guide clinical decision-making. For a culminating project, students will complete an independent EBP review, termed a Critically Appraised Topic, and apply it directly to decision-making in the clinical program.
Masters Thesis
In the MedSLP program, students have the option of completing a Masters Thesis under the guidance of Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty in lieu of the comprehensive exam. NOTE: Graduation from the program is dependent upon successful completion of either a thesis or comprehensive exam.
Clinical Fellowship (CF)
For students in the Medical Speech-Language Pathology Program, the Clinical Fellowship (CF) is coordinated and administered by the MedSLP program in partnership with affiliated sites. This unique framework ensures programmatic continuity and quality throughout the training period. The CF experience takes place during the third and final year of the program, requiring four quarters to complete. One weekly evening course, the Clinical Forum, meets every quarter during the CF to provide topical and responsive instruction, as well as perspectives offered by CF supervisors from a variety of sites. During this evening session, a range of treatment options, diagnoses, and prognostic indicators can be studied with the departmental faculty and other third-year classmates. Additionally, during the CF, the UW MedSLP Program provides mentoring by our internationally recognized faculty, enhancing the transition from the academic environment to the work setting.
