Additional Coursework
ASHA also requires the following coursework for anyone applying for certification. These courses must be taken outside of the field of speech and hearing sciences. Students must have received either a "Credit" grade or have achieved a numeric grade of at least .7. We highly recommend that these courses be completed prior to entry into graduate school due to the rigorous graduate curriculum. The requirements include a minimum of 1 course each in:
- biological science (e.g., zoology, biology)
- behavioral science (e.g., psychology, sociology)
- physical science (e.g., physics, chemistry
- mathematics (non-remedial) or statistics
The Graduate Record Examination
Applicants must report GRE scores earned within the last five years. There is no minimum score required. If you take the GRE more than once, you may give us the scores of your “best” exam (but you can’t pick-and-choose scores across exams).
GPA
A minimum GPA of 3.0 during the last 90 quarter credit hours of study (60 semester) is required.
Observation Hours
ASHA requires a minimum of 25 hours of clinical observation prior to embarking on the Clinical Fellowship. Applicants are encouraged to complete these observations, particularly in the medical setting, prior to entering graduate school.
