Woodstick Big Beat
Audiology students promote hearing conservation at Woodstick. Each year, professional and amateur drummers gather for the Woodstick Big Beat event in Seattle and in 15 other cities across the country to promote drumming and to raise money for local charities. In 2010, 402 drummers participated, collectively generating sound pressure levels as high as 103 dB. Audiology students from the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at UW have attended the event since 2008 to educate participants about hearing conservation. Students make use of what they have learned in the classroom and clinic to develop interactive materials explaining noise induced hearing loss, hearing conservation, and the proper use of earplugs. The next Woodstick Big Beat event will take place on November 6, 2011.
