Lab 3: Single Unit Recording

I. Purpose

The purpose of this lab is to familiarize you with the procedures used to record from auditory neurons and with the generation of tuning curves and rate/frequency functions.

II. Equipment

Video playback equipment and a videotape of "Recording Neural Activity".

III. Orientation Points
  1. Describe whgat will be coverred in this videotape, especially the collection of data that will be used to generate a tuning curve and a rate/frequency function.
  2. Review tuning curves.

IV. Lab Assignment

  1. Watch the video.
  2. Generate a tuning curve from the data collected in "Recording Neural Activity". Put the "Neural threshold" on the y-axis and "Frequency" on the x-axis.
  3. Describe this tuning curve and give its best (characteristic) frequency.
