2012 Lab Assignments
NO LABS Mar 26-27
Lab 1: The Conductive Apparatus - Apr 2-3 slides handout
The purpose of this lab is to give you practice with concepts of a transfer function and to demonstrate the response characteristics of the external ear. The lab will also familiarize you with the structures of the external ear, review concepts related to impedance of the middle ear, and demonstrate the effects of sound frequency on middle ear impedance.
Lab 2: Otoacoustic Emissions - Apr 9-10 slides handout
The purpose of this lab is to give you practice with concepts of otoacoustic emissions and to demonstrate the effects of the active cochlear mechanism.
NO LABS Apr 16-17
Lab 3: Masking and the Critical Band- April 23-24 slides handout
The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate how the presence of one sound interferes with the audibility of another and how masking depends on the bandwidth and frequency of the masker.
Lab 4: The audibility curve and loudness scaling - April 30-May 1 slides handout
The purpose of this lab is to show how the frequency of a sound affects its audibility and to demonstrate how loudness changes as the intensity of sound changes.
Lab 5: Pitch and Temporal integration - May 7-8 slides handout
The purpose of this lab is to show how the duration of a sound affects its audibility.
NO LABS May 14-15
Lab 6: Speech Perception - May 21-22 slides handout.
The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate some important phenomena in speech perception.
NO LABS May 28-29
