Lab Assignments

NO LABS Mar 30

Lab 1: The Conductive Apparatus - Apr 6-7

The purpose of this lab is to give you practice with concepts of a transfer function and to demonstrate the response characteristics of the external ear. The lab will also familiarize you with the structures of the external ear, review concepts related to impedance of the middle ear, and demonstrate the effects of sound frequency on middle ear impedance.

Lab 2: Otoacoustic Emissions - Apr 13-14

The purpose of this lab is to give you practice with concepts of otoacoustic emissions and to demonstrate the effects of the active cochlear mechanism.

Lab 3: Single-Unit Recording - Apr 20-21

The purpose of this lab is to familiarize you with the procedures used to record from auditory neurons and with the generation of tuning curves and rate/frequency functions.

Lab 4: Masking and the Critical Band- April 27-28

The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate how the presence of one sound interferes with the audibility of another and how masking depends on the bandwidth and frequency of the masker.

Lab 5: Response bias and the audibility curve - May 4-5

The purpose of this lab is to show how the frequency of a sound affects its audibility and to demonstrate how loudness changes as the intensity of sound changes.

Lab 6: Loudness and Temporal integration - May 11-12

The purpose of this lab is to show how the duration of a sound affects its audibility.

NO LABS May 18-19

NO LABS May 25-26

Lab 7: Binaural Hearing - Jun 1-2

The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate how using two ears allows us to localize sounds and improve sensitivity.
