Evidence that argues that temporal coding must play a role
Burns & Viemeister (1982): Can listeners identify melodies played with sinusoidally amplitude modulated noise?
YES.
(From Yost (1994)
A sinusoidally  amplitude modulated noise does not create  a spectral ÒpatternÓ; it elicits about the same activity over the whole basilar membrane. But we know that auditory nerve fibers will phase-lock to the amplitude modulation. But SAM noise has a pitch that corresponds to the rate of amplitude modulation that is strong enough that people can identify melodies played with SAM noise.
