| Your role: | You will assist in the design, set-up, and running of Family Science Celebrations and Science Awareness Workshops at elementary schools throughout Seattle. A group of SSL students describe their role at the site… "Titled as Volunteer Scientists, you are assigned a science station to assist with. Each station has a different scientific experiment that should require about fifteen minutes for the children to complete. We described the experiment to students and ask questions to try to spark scientific thought. We also encourage them to explain the procedure and significance of the experiment to their parents and other students." The projects are designed to be easy to recreate at home as a means to get parents involved. | |
Hours per week: |
Hours per week will vary. Evening programs last about two hours, generally from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. |

Type of class activity: |
1. Family Science Celebrations: Elementary students bring their families to their school for an evening to engage in hands-on science activities. Some activities reflect the new science curriculum used in the classroom. Other activities demonstrate how science can be done at home. Science stations are spread around a gymnasium or cafeteria. SSL students, other volunteer scientists, and the children work together to guide families through the activities. 2. Science Awareness Workshops for Parents: Parents learn about the philosophy and mechanics of the new elementary science curriculum. Typically, a group of 45 parents is divided into 3-member teams to conduct a variety of science investigations. Later, the teams report back to the whole group about what they've discovered. SSL students circulate among the participants to answer questions and provide encouragement. |
