SEATTLE EMERGENCY HOUSING

Your role: Your role at this site is to prepare and perform the science experiments with the children, serve as role models, and be sensitive to the needs of children in transitional situations. "A good way to prepare for the experiments at this site is to look over each experiment and then think of questions that would guide the kids towards thinking about the scientific part of the project. Since you don't really want to just tell them the answer, it's very useful to think of examples that they can relate to."[SSL student quote]

Hours per week:

Site visits occur each week. Times are arranged each quarter to accommodate SSL student schedules

Type of class activity:

SSL students take science kits to girls and boys at Seattle Emergency Housing, a transitional housing development. The science kits have a particular theme, like motion, water or space. Each kit has 6-8 weeks of activities, so you are expected to complete one kit per quarter. You will accompany the site coordinator (SC) during the first several visits. If both you and the SC feel comfortable, you may lead an experiment at the quarter's end without the assistance of the SC.
