Social Work Continuing Education

Social Work Continuing Education (SWCE) supports the educational outreach mission of both the University of Washington and the School of Social Work. SWCE provides an extensive curriculum of year-round, life-long learning opportunities to human service professionals. The SWCE service offerings help professionals stay current with new developments in the field, upgrade their skills, exchange ideas and network with colleagues, and revitalize their commitment to their profession. SWCE is an authorized provider of continuing education courses for a wide variety of professionals who maintain their licensure or other accreditation.

Continuing Education Courses

SWCE offers a range of affordable one- and two-day courses for social work and human service professionals – including several options for one-day ethics workshops. All courses are competitively priced, and usually below market value.

Continuing Education Certificate Programs

Currently, SWCE offers three certificate programs. These programs are learning opportunities that provide participants evidenced based, “best practice” knowledge and skills. Instructors are experts and leaders in their respective fields. Certificates are specifically designed with the working professional in mind, meeting over multiple sessions and incorporating a variety of learning styles, such as online and classroom environments. Psychological Trauma: Effective Treatment and Practice: Designed for post-graduate professionals, this multi-disciplinary training prepares clinicians to deliver current, evidence-based, multi-theoretical, and skilled assessments and interventions with youth and adults who have experienced trauma.

Geriatric Mental Health: This comprehensive program provides working practitioners with the critical knowledge they need to understand the acute and chronic mental health needs of older adults as well as to gain the important skills in diagnosing and treating these needs.

Guardianship: This course is designed for individuals who seek the knowledge and skills to provide guardianship services for adults who have been declared incapacitated by the State of Washington. This course counts towards the requirements to become a state Certified Professional Guardians (CPG).

Continuing Education Tailored Workshops and Partnerships

SWCE welcomes the opportunity to partner with both public, non-governmental, and private human service providers and institutions to develop custom training programs as well as to support current training programs. Continuing Education Hours

In today’s world, life-long learning is essential to keep pace with best practice knowledge, models, and skills. Certified and licensed professionals in a wide variety of fields need to continually complete contact hours for credentialing. SWCE meets this important piece of professional practice through being a authorized provider of high quality and affordable courses and programs that meet continuing education hours across multiple human service fields.

Social workers, mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists. SWCE is a qualified provider for continuing education requirements for licenses through the Washington State Department of Health (e.g., LICSW, LASW, LMHC).

Licensed Psychologists. SWCE is a qualified continuing education provider for licensed psychologists, per WAC 246-924-240.

School Counselors and School Social Workers.The UW is approved by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to provide clock hours for all those with continuing level certificates.

Washington State Mental Health Specialists. The workshops listed within the Certificate Programs in Child and Adolescent Mental Heath and Geriatric Mental Health count toward the 100
hours of classroom training required for those working in the public mental health system who seek designation as a Mental Health Specialist in these fields.
