Grant Submission - Student Researchers
More (and more!) doctoral students are applying for dissertation support from NIH and Foundations and the chances are good that you will, too. I'm writing to all of you today to inform/remind you that there are necessary steps that have to be taken when you apply for a fellowship or research grant.
No matter how small the amount of funding you apply for, your proposal must be reviewed and signed by the University of Washington's Grant and Contract Services (GCS) office. We must submit the grant proposal to GCS two weeks in advance of the funding agency's deadline. The good news is that there is help available - my job is to help you build a budget and to get you through the GCS system.
Although we must submit your research or dissertation grant submission to the UW's Grant and Contract Services office 2 weeks ahead of the funding agency's deadline, you must let me know weeks in advance that you're submitting. Your grants oftentimes are due on or about the same deadline that faculty research proposals are due. I must manage my workload and allocate research development resources, so need advance warning. Even when you're at the "maybe" stage, I'd like to hear from you.
Your committee may forget to tell you to see me about your fellowship or research proposal or they may tell you that the amount of money you're applying for is too small to go through GCS. Or they may tell you that *you* don't need to go through GCS because you're a student. Having read and saved this link, however, you will contact me anyway! A word to the wise: You will save yourself a lot of work if you contact me the minute you decide to apply for external funding (no matter how small the amount of money).
Thanks!
