Global-Local Community Action Institute (GLOCAI)
Title and Faculty Coordinators: Global-Local Community Action Institute (GLOCAI).
Coordinating Group: Tony Ishisaka, Sue Sohng, Nancy Farwell, Ratnesh Nagda
Affiliated Members: Gino Aisenberg, Stan DeMello, Diana Pierce, Taryn Lindhorst, Jane Macy, Lynn Carrigan
Mission and Goals: GLOCAI's mission is to strengthen the sustainability and vibrancy of local communities subjected to increasing health, wealth, and social disparities in the global era, through strategic collaborations with localities and the public and corporate sectors. GLOCAI participants seek to create:
- New knowledge - scholarship toward understanding of the relationships between "globalization" and "locality";
- New local action initiatives -- models of local and public action, citizenship, leadership, and citizen participation which are suitable to the complexities of the global era;
- New collaboration -- models of university, public, and private sector collaborations that mutually transform the community and the academic partners, moving both toward a shared social justice agenda; and
- New pedagogy --sites and models of learning-and-doing that efface historic divisions between expert and novice, knower and doer, town and gown.
