Institute for the Study of Interpersonal Violence and Trauma
The Institute for the Study of Interpersonal Violence and Trauma aims to develop the infrastructure to allow for ongoing attention to three primary goals:
- Strengthen our understanding of what constitutes trauma through intensive study and critique of the dominant models of trauma, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder;
- Advance our capacity to conceptualize context and how it interacts with the events surrounding violence or traumatic injury to create identifiable patterns of amplified risk and resilient adaptation.
- Promote the development of social workers and other mental health professionals in the provision of state-of-the-art prevention, policy intervention and psychosocial treatment of interpersonal violence and psychosocial trauma.
The Institute has as its major mission integration and innovation in the study and treatment of violence and trauma. This mission will be pursued through efforts to bridge differences between disciplines, communities, and perspectives. Collaboration, synthesis of knowledge and experience, innovation in research and study, and the development of new paradigms for research and practice are the core mechanisms through which the mission will be pursued. At the foundation of all activities will be the pursuit of the mission of the Institute within the context of the core values of social justice, multiculturalism, high quality service research and training, and social transformation. Centered around a core faculty within the School, the Institute will undertake the following activities:
- Trauma Seminar
- Certificate Program in Practice with Traumatized Individuals
- Discussions in Depth Series
- MSW Student Seminar
- Trauma Practice Conference
- Visiting Practitioner Program
The center is Co-Directed by Dr. Jon Conte and Dr. Emiko Tajima.
