Key research questions:
- How have public policies assisted or hindered the capacity
of community-based, not-for-profit organizations to engage in
community development and to provide for the social welfare of
their communities?
- How can government agencies and community-based organizations
best work together to improve the effectiveness of public programs?
- What public policies are best suited for the long-term development
of Non-profit organisations?
Multicultural Interdisciplinary Research and Training Program
in Ecuador and Peru, an NIH-funded project between Fundacion CIMAS
del Ecuador and the Consortium of Western Washington Universities.
Lynn Carrigan, Practicum Coordinator
LTC@u.Washington.edu
CIMAS, a Spanish language and culture program located in Quito,
Ecuador, has obtained a grant to train students of color and first
generation immigrant minorities, especially those who do not have
the financial means for an international experience, in community
public health assessments
and projects. They accept applications from social workers interested
in public health and research, for a 10-week summer program that
pays expenses and a small stipend, and includes home stays. Working
knowledge of Spanish is required, and will be supplemented by immersion
in the culture. Social work students can also do other practicums
there and develop other
projects, though funding is not available through CIMAS for that.
