Karina Walters Conducting Research in New Zealand on Fulbright Award

Dr. Karina Walters, Associate Professor of Social Work, the William P. and Ruth Gerberding University Professor, and Director of the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute at the UW, received a Fulbright Award to work in New Zealand in 2007-2008. Dr. Walters is conducting research and giving lectures in universities and in Maori communities across New Zealand.

She was invited by Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Smith and colleagues to be a research fellow at Nga Pae O Te Maramatanga — the National Institute of Research Excellence for Maori Advancement and Development. Dr. Walters is collaborating with Dr. Smith on translating and developing research methodologies for use with indigenous populations in New Zealand and the U.S.

In 1945, Senator William J. Fulbright of Arkansas proposed an international educational program aimed at promoting mutual understanding between people in the U.S. and those in other countries across the globe, a program that eventually became the flagship international exchange program in the U.S.  Fulbright awards are given to people with proven leadership skills and with the spirit and gift to share their work with people in other countries.
