Akua Campanella, MSW Student, Named Bonderman Fellow

Akua Campanella, MSW student in the School of Social Work, has received a prestigious Bonderman Travel Fellowship.

The University Honors Program recently announced the awards for five undergraduate and four other graduate students at UW.
The Bonderman Travel Fellowships are created through a gift from David Bonderman, who earned his undergraduate degree in Russian from the University of Washington in 1963. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he received a Sheldon Fellowship that allowed him to travel internationally. The experience had a profound impact on his life. Now a successful investment advisor, Mr. Bonderman provides opportunities to current UW students for similarly transformative travel experiences.

Students traveling with this $20,000 fellowship set off on solo journeys that are at least eight months long and that take them to at least six countries in two major regions of the world. While traveling, students may not pursue academic study, projects, or research. Established in 1995, this fellowship aims to expose students to the intrinsic, often life-changing, benefits of international travel.

Akua plans to travel to Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Guam, and rural areas in New Zealand. Then she moves on to Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Cape Verde, and the Canary Islands and will complete her journey in Venezuela, Surinam, and Guyana.

We all look forward to the report of Akua’s adventures when she returns! Congratulations, Akua, for being awarded this enriching opportunity!
