DESCRIPTIONS
Gender and Sexuality in the Classroom
As social workers, we have ethical responsibilities to social justice, the welfare of the individual, and non-discrimination. But what happens when belief systems clash in the classroom? What do we do when homophobia, racism, transphobia, and other ism's go uninterrupted or supported? This brief seminar will allow students to learn a bit about how to interrupt, confront, and ask for support around homophobia and transphobia. Come with questions, thoughts, concerns, etc. Looking forward to seeing you there!
How Government Works
As social workers we know that public policies and public budgets affect everything we do, so if you live in Washington--even temporarily--this workshop is for you. It offers a quick way to learn the basics about government here (local, state, federal) and how you can be involved.
The Latest Technologies: What do you need to know?
Worried that you will not be able to interface with students who are conversant with YouTube, Blackberries, MySpace, etc?!! Join a Social Work doctoral student who will lead you through the latest communication technologies and help you know what you need to know and what you can safely ignore!
Time Management
Designed to help you examine how you spend your time and how you might be able to become more efficient in your role as a student. You will also learn cognitive and behavioral strategies for overcoming procrastination.
Transitions to Graduate School
Designed to answer the questions of students returning to school after being away from academic life for some time. Led by an MSW from the UW Counseling Center.
Writing Process and APA
Overview of key areas of academic writing: The Writing Process & Fears; Finding Ideas & Organizing; APA method of Citation. Led by the SSW Writing Consultant!
Writing: Problems & Strategies
Students will work together to focus on sample sentences and paragraphs to 1) correct common mistakes in grammar and mechanics and 2) examine what makes for effective writing. Led by Gary Olson, Ph.D. in English. (Note: Students may take either one or both Writing Workshops; there is little overlap in content.)
