BASW General Education Prerequisites

Application Deadline

All students who began their college careers in Fall 1985 or later must meet the UW Arts and Sciences requirements in language skills, reasoning and writing in context, and areas of knowledge.

Prerequisites

The following courses or their equivalents are prerequisites to the BASW program that must be completed prior to beginning the major in the fall with a minimum grade of 2.0 in each course:

  • Psychology 101
  • Introductory Sociology
  • Economics 100 or 200 or 201
  • Biology 100, 101, 118, 161 or Genomics 261.
  • Statistics 220 (or equivalent) must be completed before the second year of the program. We strongly encourage students to complete statistics before entering the social welfare program. Students may also complete Soc Wf 200 before applying to the BASW program.

General Education

Language Skills—10
English composition, 5 credits; foreign language, (third quarter), 5 credits. (English composition and foreign language requirements must be passed with a GPA of 2.0 or better.)

Reasoning and Writing Skills—15
Quantitative/symbolic reasoning (QSR), 5 credits; additional writing courses, 10 credits. Please note that some departmental requirements will also meet some general education requirements. The total number of electives may then increase. Check with the adviser.

Areas of Knowledge—75
Visual, literary, and performing arts (VLPA), 20 credits; individuals and societies (IS), 20 credits; natural world (NW), 20 credits; plus 15 credits in any of the VLPA, IS, or NW areas. Fifteen credits in the undergraduate program may also count toward the areas of knowledge. Prerequisite courses in introductory sociology, psychology, economics, and human biology or their equivalencies may also be counted toward the areas of knowledge requirement.

Electives
The number of general electives is variable and is evaluated upon acceptance to the undergraduate program when students meet with a Student Services adviser.
