Graduate Non-Matriculated Courses

What is Graduate Non-Matriculated status?

Individuals who have completed a bachelor degree and wish to take a course in Social Work but have not been admitted to the School of Social Work master degree program, may apply to enroll as a Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) student.

GNM students pay graduate-level fees. Up to 12 credits taken as a GNM student may be applied to the MSW program if the student is later admitted to the degree program.

Who takes courses as a GNM?

-People who think they may apply for admission to the MSW program at the School of Social Work in the future. This is a good way to sample graduate school before making a decision to apply for admission.

-People who want to take one or two courses and perhaps apply them to a future degree in Social Work, here or at another college or university.

-People who find this subject matter interesting.

Benefits of GNM

-Classes taken as a GNM student in the School of Social Work may be applied to the MSW if you are later admitted to the program.

-You get to know faculty members in the School of Social Work.

-You will have the opportunity to become familiar with an area of the curriculum and the social justice perspective held at this school of social sork.

Limitations on GNM Status

No more than 12 GNM credits may be applied to a UW degree program.

Successful completion of coursework as a GMN student does not ensure admission to the MSW Degree Program.

Not all Social Work courses are available to GNM students.  For example, practice method courses and field practicum are not available.  Only courses identified with available space for GNM students at the time of registration will be open to GNM students.

You are generally not eligible for student financial aid unless you are enrolled as a matriculated degree or seeking student.  For questions regarding financial aid, please contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/
