The Application Deadline for Fall 2010
January 15, 2010
Students must fulfill all requirements of the University of Washington Graduate School and the School of Social Work. Graduate School requirements include a minimum grade of 2.7 in all courses counted for the MSW degree; a minimum of 36 credits, 18 of which must be decimal-graded; and a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average in all 400- and 500-level courses taken during the MSW program at the University of Washington. MSW program requirements include completion of the required foundation and advanced curriculum credits and demonstrated competence in both academic and field practicum work.
Human Biology Requirements
All students are required to pass a course with content in human biology before beginning the advanced or concentration year (including practicum). Human biology content may be taken up to 10 years before or during the MSW program. Human biology credits may not be applied to the MSW degree. If admitted to the MSW program, those applicants who do not have a human biology course in their academic background will be required either to:
- Provide proof of having completed a course with human biology content (includes courses in nutrition) or
- Complete an approved human biology course before beginning the advanced year (including practicum). Currently, Biology 100, 101, 118, 119 and 180 , Nutrition 300, Genomics 261 and the Continuing Education course “Human Biology for Social Work” at the University of Washington provide appropriate content for the requirement. Courses in nutrition, psychobiology of women, genetics and biology of aging also fulfill the human biology requirement.
Basic Statistics Requirement
All students must complete an introductory statistics course before beginning Soc W 505, Social Welfare Research. (Soc W 505 is taken in winter quarter of the first year for Day students, and fall quarter of the second year for Extended Degree Program students.) Any passing grade in an introductory college course in statistics (from any field ), taken at any time prior to Soc W 505 will satisfy the statistics prerequisite.
Students who have not met their statistics requirement are not allowed to take Soc W 505, which may significantly delay their progress through the program.
