BASW

Undergraduate Program in Social Welfare.

Application Deadline for Fall 2009
April 1, 2009

BA in Community, Leadership, and Social Justice (CLSJ)

Update on the CLSJ Program

At this time, the School is accepting applications for the Fall 2008 BASW program ONLY, with the option for students to change majors upon state approval of the CLSJ program

The Community, Leadership, and Social Justice major, pending approval, has recently been added to the program for students on our Seattle campus who are interested in developing and applying knowledge in social welfare, but who are considering pathways other than a traditional practice degree.

The CLSJ major is designed to support an engaged and active group of world citizen-students who focus their studies and action on social structures and problems in contemporary society. CLSJ students are scholar-activists interested in promoting social justice, multiculturalism, and human welfare for diverse populations in local and global contexts.

The CLSJ major, which includes approximately 75 credits during the junior and senior years, offers students a foundational understanding of history, theory, and policy in social welfare. Students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty to conduct research or advance projects of interest to them. The classes in this major include lecture sessions, small group projects and seminars, service learning opportunities, as well as a capstone project. The major prepares students for careers promoting social justice and advanced degrees in social work and other disciplines.

The CLSJ major is offered as an alternative to our general BASW program for students who seek opportunities in research, community development, and advocacy. This degree program, considered a liberal arts degree, prepares students for graduate studies in social work and the social sciences. It offers study abroad opportunities and mentoring from experienced professionals and social work/social science scholars.
