Title: A Multi-University Evaluation of the Educational Effects of Intergroup Dialogue
SSW Investigator(s): Biren (Ratnesh) Nagda, PI.
Non-SSW Investigator(s): [Co-Investigators: Patricia Gurin, Ximena Zuniga]
Description: The project evaluates effects of race and gender intergroup dialogues at ten universities. The Supreme Court ruled in Grutter. v. Bollinger that educational benefits of racial/ethnic diversity provide a compelling governmental interest that justifies the use of race as one of many factors in student admission to higher education institutions. Based on a new theoretical model of intergroup contact, we investigate several questions: (1) Does participation in intergroup dialogues have educational effects that cannot be attributed to selectivity, and (2) How do communication and psychological processes that take place within dialogues account for demonstrated effects?
