American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work Student Awards

Description: The American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (ABE) is the national certification board for advanced clinical social work. While focused on the advanced practitioner, ABE addresses the graduate student community by offering cash awards emblematic of excellence in preparation for clinical practice (the Judith Holm Memorial Student Awards) and a suite of materials focused on confidentiality. At this site, students may find out more about BCD certification (for advanced practitioners), ABE itself, and other resources in the field of clinical social work.

 

Career Development Grant Program

Majors: All Areas of Study

Description: Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to AAUW members, women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.

Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for doctoral-level work.

 

The Greater Seattle Business Association (GSBA), Pride Foundation, and Inland Business Alliance (INBA)

Description: The GSBA, Pride Foundation, and INBA are committed to providing tangible community support for lesbian and gay students and children of gay and lesbian parents. All scholarships promote leadership in the sexual minority community and are restricted to residents of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, or Alaska. Some have additional criteria.

 

Gosnell Memorial Scholarship Fund

Majors: MSW student admitted into accredited program.

Description: The Gosnell Fund was established in honor of Consuelo Gosnell, a social work practitioner who wished to promote services to special populations, particularly American Indian/Alaska Natives and Latinos. Gosnell scholarships provide financial assistance to social work students in graduate degree programs who demonstrate a commitment to working with these populations and with public or voluntary nonprofit agencies.

 

Hattie M. Strong Foundation Student Loans

Majors: All Areas of Study. Applicants must be enrolled, as full-time students, in an accredited four-year college or graduate school.

Description: The Strong Foundation administers a loan program for American college students, studying in the U.S. or abroad, who are entering their FINAL year of study in a baccalaureate or graduate degree program.  Loans are made solely on the basis of individual merit, without regard to race, sex, or religion, are interest-free and do not require collateral.  Applicants must be enrolled, as full-time students, in an accredited four-year college or graduate school.  Our maximum loan is $5,000.

The terms of repayment are based upon monthly income after graduation and are arranged with each individual so as to work a minimum of hardship.

 

Lena Chang Scholarship

Description: The Lena Chang Internships are open to students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States at either the undergraduate or graduate level. Applicants must demonstrate superior academic achievement and financial need. Preference will be given to students of color

Description: he Mary Gates Endowment for Students was established by Bill and Melinda Gates in 1995 to honor the memory of Bill's mother, Mary Maxwell Gates (1929-1994). A leader who promoted voluntary service and philanthropy both locally and nationally, Mary Gates served as a UW Regent from 1975-1993.

 

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program

Majors: Medicine, Social Work, Nursing, Dentistry, Psychology, Family Therapy

Description: The NHSC continually seeks clinicians dedicated to working with our Nation's underserved. We have created a program to connect these unique individuals with the communities that need them, and to support them during their initial time of service. Fully trained health professionals who are dedicated to working with the underserved and have qualifying educational loans are eligible to compete for repayment of those loans if they choose to serve in a community of greatest need. In addition to loan repayment, these clinicians receive a competitive salary and a chance to have a significant impact on a community.

 

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

Description: The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.

 

Truman Scholarship

Description: The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields.  Students must be college juniors at the time of selection.  The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development.  Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs:  Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, The Truman Fellows Program, and the Public Service Law Conference.  Please visit the For Scholars section of the website for an overview of the programs the Foundation currently offers for Scholars.

Service Requirement:  All Candidates should be aware that the Truman Scholarship has a newly instituted service requirement.  Scholars selected from 2005 on are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.  Scholars who do not meet this service requirement, or who fail to provide timely proof to the Foundation of such employment, will be required to repay funds received along with interest.  The Foundation will have an appeals process for special circumstances.

 

University of Washington Retirement Association Scholarship

UWRA and its members have a lasting commitment to the educational process. A basic part of UWRA program is to provide scholarship funds to financially needy students. These funds come from the operating budget, from member donations, and from an endowment made in 1999 from funds deriving from the "Wallingford House fund."

Description: The Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant program is intended to stimulate policy-relevant urban research in several ways: by encouraging doctoral candidates to pursue research topics in community, housing, and urban development; by assisting doctoral candidates in the timely completion of the dissertation research; and by providing an arena for new scholars to share their research findings.

Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship

Description: The Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a masters degree candidate in social work who demonstrates an interest in, or has experience with, health/mental health practice and has a commitment to working in the African American community.  Scholarship recipients now work in hospitals, medical clinics, and social services agencies that provide treatment and specialized services to African American patients.

 

WSSCSW $1000 Clinical Scholarship Award

Description: Each year, the Washington State Society for Clinical Social Work awards a $1000 scholarship to one 2nd year MSW student at the University of Washington, Seattle, School of Social Work whose work and study aspirations are in the clinical social work realm.
