Doctoral student Seunghye Hong was named one of the six Magnuson Scholars from the UW Health Sciences schools for 2007-2008. The Magnuson Scholars Program recognizes graduate students with outstanding potential for research in the health sciences. The scholars program, established in 1991 in honor of the late U.S. senator from Washington State, is part of the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professional Training. Hong’s research focuses on a contextually sensitive approach to health through investigation of the relationships between neighborhood contexts and health.
Doctoral student Jung-Eun Lee was awarded a prestigious Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship for 2007-2008. In her research, Lee is using the longitudinal data of the Seattle Social Development Project at the Social Development Research Group to examine the complex interplay of low-income children’s social contexts and their educational aspirations, most importantly how these interact and change over time.
MSW student Stefanie Bonigut is this year’s recipient of the Hooyman Intergenerational Fellowship. She is also particpating in the Hartford Gerontology Practicum Partnership Program. Her rotational placements are with the Alzheimer's Assocation of Western Washington and Senior Services.
Five Students Hold CSWE Underrepresented Minority Research Fellowships. This fall Quynh-Tram Nguyen and Ebasa Sarka joined three of our other SSW PhD students who are continuing in CSWE’s NIMH-funded mental health research training program: Cecilia Ayón, Roy Old Person, and Alma Trinidad. Last year there were only 24 clinical and 15 research fellows (3 of them UW students) nationwide, so we are especially proud that 5 of our students are participating in the research fellowship program.
In 1974, CSWE was awarded a grant by the National Institute of Mental Health to increase the number of minority doctoral students majoring in mental health research. This program now prepares doctoral students to be among the next generation of NIMH-funded mental health researchers. In 1978, CSWE was awarded a second grant for a Clinical Fellowship program, now funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This fellowship was established for doctoral students preparing for leadership roles in the mental health and substance abuse field. These two fellowship programs provide funding to social workers with master’s degrees who are interested in full-time doctoral study in a social work doctoral program. For more about the programs, see the information on the Minority Fellowships at the CSWE website: www.cswe.org.
