Institutes of Excellence, Special projects and Programs

Our institutes, projects and programs enable students and faculty to explore in depth the questions that motivate them; develop innovative and practical responses to social problems; foster partnerships that strengthen our communities; and ontribute valuable, tested insights to the field of social work.

Institute of Excellence

Institutes of Excellence, Special projects and ProgramsThe Institutes of Excellence are designed to foster new, crosscutting collaborations within and beyond the University, and to harness our potential to make positive changes in communities here and around the globe.

The Institutes include:

  • The Institute on Inequality and Social Structures

  • The Global-Local Community Action Institute

  • The Institute for Multigenerational Health, Development, and Equality

  • The Institute for International Indigenous Health and Child Welfare Research

  • The Institute at Seattle for the Study of Interpersonal Violence/Trauma

Special Projects and Programs

Our research and community service are often carried out through special projects and programs developed
to address specific opportunities and needs. The School makes a considerable investment of time and
resources in community collaborations and in University programs and projects, such as:

  • Community Service Learning program, which supports paid community-based internships for
    undergraduates who are exploring social work in the context of local community engagement;

  • Partnership for Youth, a collaborative partnership between the School, homeless youth agencies,
    local businesses, and homeless kids to improve the coordination of services for homeless youth in
    the University District;

  • The Spitzer Peace Exchange, a faculty and student exchange program between the School of
    Social Work and Ben Gurion University in Israel, established to address the effects of globalization,
    poverty, migration, and civil and international conflict.

Each program — and many more like them — are vital and deserving of support.

UW Social Work BuildingU.S News and World Report ranked the UW School of Social work third in the United States out of 168 Schools.
