The School of Social Work's Website is one of the primary ways
that users first get to know our School. A coordinated Visual Identity
(the 'look and feel') communicates several things to our users:
- Projects a cohesiveness that helps to present a unified image
of our community, eliminating confusion amongst users.
- Consistency conveys credibility and reliability.
- Consistency creates a known (and, we hope, remembered) standard
look which users come to associate with our School.
- Consistent design and structure ensures an easier time navigating
through different portions of our site.
We provide this guide as part of our efforts to continue coordinating
a strong visual identity for our School. These pages delineate the
common logo, colors, and fonts which constitute our Visual Identity, both
in web versions and on hardcopy publications. The rest of this section
on Visual Identity is more technical in nature, with very specific
guidelines for web and hardcopy publishing. Hardcopy graphics require
a higher resolution than do web versions of the same graphics, so
we offer guidelines for website development separately, and will
include a downloadable version of the hardcopy logo as well.
Recommendations
We recommend that all SSW Units and Affiliated projects follow
these guidelines:
- Incorporate a clear statement of affiliation and
the SSW logo into the first page of their websites.
This logo would either be the standard colors or be
black on white (if that works better aesthetically).
- Prominently place a statement of affiliation with
the School of Social Work on all external documents,
including articles and external reports.
- Business Cards
We recommend that all business cards of our faculty
and staff use the SSW logo.
Contact Mike Winans at 616-6707, mwinans@u.washington.edu,
to order SSW business cards. They cannot yet be ordered
online through Publication Services.
- Correspondence Materials
- Stationery and envelopes are all standardized
with the new logo and font design and colors.
- Where it is not cost effective to use a color
version of the logo (as in mass mailings of correspondence),
it is acceptable to use a black and white version
of the logo. This can be done either via photocopying
of letterhead or electronically inserting the
logo into the document before printing.
- Adaptations which creatively follow the spirit
of these guidelines are encouraged. For example,
a suggested adaptation with regard to mailing
is to use a rubber return-address stamp with the
logo added, to avoid the prohibitive cost of printing
the logo on mailing labels.
