| October 1997 | The UW hosts the International Liver Transplantation Society meeting that attracts over 500 participants from 26 countries. Speakers include Sir Roy Calne and Dr. Tom Starzl, pioneers in liver transplantation. |
| April 1998 | Dr. Lucile Wrenshall performs region's first laparoscopic nephrectomy on a living kidney donor |
| May 1998 | Dr. James Perkins performs the region's first in-situ split liver in a cadaveric donor, yielding two successful liver transplant (one adult and one pediatric) |
| July 1999 | A two-and-a-half year-old boy from Kingston, WA becomes the region's first recipient of a living-related liver transplant in a coordinated surgery performed by transplant teams from UWMC (led by Dr. James Perkins) and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center (led by Dr. Patrick Healey). The boy's mother was the donor. |
