Division of HMC / Trauma Surgery

The Trauma/Critical Care Division is based at Harborview Medical Center. The only Level 1 (regional) Trauma Center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, this clinical arm of Harborview - known as the Northwest Regional Trauma Center - cares for emergency surgical and trauma patients, and is closely linked to the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center. Working closely with Plastic Surgery division, Trauma / Critical Care provides highly skilled, emergency and rehabilitative burn care for victims in the four-state region. By cooperative agreement with Children's Hospital, Harborview is also the region's only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

The general surgeons listed below possess full-time appointments at Harborview, and expertise in trauma, burn, and surgical critical care. They lead a skilled team of surgical and medical specialists to provide the highest level of emergency surgical care in this four-state region (comprising one quarter of the nation's land mass).

Another part of our mission is to provide complete surgical care to underserved populations of Seattle and King County.

An US Army MAST (Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic) helicopter delivers the first aeromedical evacuation patient to HMC in 1972. The photo was provided by Dr. Roland Folse, a graduate of UW surgical education program, and Chairman emeritus at Southern Illinois University.

The MAST program was designed to help keep army helicopter pilots' skills current while they were on "stateside" duty during the Viet Nam war. This service provided the only aeromedical evacuation service until HMC Emergency Services Director Dr. Michael Copass started Airlift Northwest.
