Research at the University of Washington

The University of Washington is a national leader in research on the effects of bariatric surgery on patients and the healthcare system. Over five years the Department of Surgery has received nearly two million dollars in National Institutes of Health funding to study how to improve bariatric surgical procedures and to learn more about how these procedures work.

The University of Washington is one of only 6 centers nationwide to be part of the largest study in bariatric surgery research, called LABS (Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery). As part of this study, we are working to answer important questions like how diabetes improves after surgery, how to avoid adverse outcomes, and how to get patients to recover from these procedures sooner. Working with clinicians in all areas of the medical center, researchers and surgeons at the University of Washington are actively searching out the ways to make bariatric surgery safer and better in the future.

All patients are invited to participate in these studies, but involvement in the research program is not a requirement. None of the research involves experimental procedures and no patients will ever be involved in research against their will or without being fully informed about their choices. For more information about research in bariatric surgery at the University of Washington or LABS, contact SORCE@u.washington.edu.
