Benjamin Starnes to head Vascular Surgery Division
Alec Clowes Steps Down to Focus on SELU
The Department of Surgery is delighted to announce that Dr. Benjamin Starnes has accepted the position as Chief of Vascular Surgery effective July 1, 2007. He will be based at HMC, where he will focus on the expansion of the clinical vascular programs, particularly in the area of endovascular surgery.
Dr. Starnes will succeed Dr. Alexander Clowes, who has served in this capacity since 1995. Dr. Clowes is stepping down to focus on building the Southeast Lake Union research programs. The Division currently occupies the Brotman Building (formerly known as the Blue Flame Building) and has plans to expand into two new adjacent buildings currently under construction. Dr. Clowes will also be the Associate Director of the UW Medical Scientist Training Program.
Dr. Starnes trained in general and vascular surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after he obtained his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1992. He has been on active duty in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and now holds the rank of lieutenant colonel as well as Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Starnes is very well known and highly regarded for his work as a military surgeon; as well as an accomplished endovascular surgeon.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Starnes to the Department. We look forward to hearing from him in a future issue about his plans for the continued growth and development of the Division of Vascular Surgery.
