Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship

This fellowship program is non-ACGME and non-accredited.  The microsurgery fellowship is based on a large clinical referral base from five states. The program was started in 2009 and will graduate its first fellow in 2010. The fellowship educational experience is intrinsically linked to the UW Medicine Center for Reconstructive Surgery, a multi-disciplinary team with coordinated clinical and academic activities. This is a fellowship in elective microsurgery.  Replants are not included.

Goals and Objectives for Training:

Graduates of the program will have been exposed to diagnosing and peri-operative care of a large clinical volume of both pediatric and adult reconstructive problems. The goal of the program is to train individuals to be competent in all aspects of microsurgery. The fellowship experience is approximately 80% adult and 20% pediatric.

Training includes:

  • Free flaps
  • Complex non-microsurgical reconstruction
  • Nerve repairs
  • Head and neck
  • Breast implant reconstruction
  • Autologus tissue breast reconstruction
  • Facial reanimation
  • Functioning muscle transfer for facial re-animation
  • Clinical research.

Teaching Staff:
There are four full time academic plastic surgery faculty in the Microsurgery program: Drs. Peter Neligan, David Mathes, Hakim Said, and Otway Louie. Dr. Peter Neligan also operates with the craniofacial faculty at Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) on cases involving microsurgery and facial reanimation with Dr. Craig Birgfeld.

Facilities:
The program is based at the UW Medicine Center for Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC). Pediatric microsurgical experience is treated at SCH.

Clinical and Research Components:
Clinical activity is on a supervised basis. Candidates for the fellowship must be eligible for a full Washington state license and will have privileges at both UWMC and SCH.  Active participation in ongoing clinical outcome studies and case series analysis is expected. Presentation of original clinical research at a national meeting is supported and expected.

Participant’s Supervisory & Patient Care Responsibilities:
As acting instructor at the University of Washington, the participant will be involved in the clinical supervision and teaching of medical students and plastic surgery residents.

Procedural Requirements:
Individuals in the program must have completed their plastic surgery residency, have well-developed plastic surgery skills, and be familiar with the full range of plastic surgery procedures.

Didactic Components:
Participants in the program participate in CME accredited national and regional plastic surgery conferences. Attendance is expected at the weekly Resident’s Conference.

Application Deadline: August 15 for the following year’s position.  Interviews are generally held during September.

Program Length: Program is a one-year appointment, July 1st – June 30th.

Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with institutional guidelines relative to the educational level of the individual involved.
